A quality installation creating a bespoke oak panelled study, from a room which was formerly a garage.

Our client was looking to design an oak panelled study within a space which had formely been used as a garage. As the building was listed, it was imperative that the design was sympathetic to the rest of the house and needed to keep the detail, that may have been used when the house was first built.

The panels were designed in an American white oak veneer which was used to panel the walls and form the stiles and rails. Solid oak mouldings were especially tooled to create the heritage style segments and we also used, special profiled mouldings for the skirting boards, dado/chair rail and a solid oak dentil cornice to finish the panels.

When working on a project with Oak panels and mouldings, each panel and every segment requires precision cutting and fitting with every mitre requiring a perfect joint, as the staining process is unforgiving and filler is not an option!

To achieve a quality finish to the panels, they are lightly sanded with wire wool, once this has been done, the panels can be stained with an oil based stain and by adding a small amount of Jacobean Oak, to a Medium Oak Stain, we were able to penetrate and highlight the grains, which brought out the beauty of this natural product. This was applied with a brush and then the excess removed with a soft cloth. The final detail was to finish by applying two coats of acrylic lacquer.

The outcome was a splendid room, fit for a king and our client was delighted with the craftsmanship that had been delivered, saying that we had ‘exceeded expectations.’
